From The President

June 2018

Greetings to all in the Skyline family and I hope you are enjoying the summer so far.  This time of year is one of my favorites as there are many family activities, community events, warm weather and no school for the kids.  I personally am not a big fan of winter time and cold weather so a good humid 90 degree day is just fine with me.

I would like to take a moment to update everyone on a few items of interest related to the industry and Skyline specifically.

Freight demand remains strong and is expected to remain strong through the remainder of the year.  Businesses and individual consumers are confident which increases purchases and investments and thus spurs along the overall economy.  This strong economy has enabled Skyline to make investments and improvements that have been needed for quite some time.

Last year, we added 30 new trucks into the fleet.  Between June through October, we will be adding an additional 25 new trucks into service.  To put this into perspective, those 55 new trucks means that more than 40% of our tractors will be less than a year old and include the latest technologies for safety, fuel economy and driver comfort.  The manufacturers we selected for those 55 new trucks break down as follows:

  • Kenworth – 25 units
  • Mack – 20 Units
  • Freightliner – 10 Units

We have plans to purchase additional new tractors in the first half of 2019 and we intend to buy a large group of new trailers to replace the leased trailers in the fleet.  I’ll have more details in the coming months as we finalize orders and delivery schedules.

In addition to the investment in new equipment, Skyline has also worked to improve the benefits and compensation offered to our drivers.  Since January 2017, there have been numerous increases and new benefits including the following:

  • Safety Bonus increase
  • SkyPro Performance Pay implemented
  •  Base rate per mile increase
  • Per Diem rate increase
  • Holiday pay increase
  • Stop off pay increase
  • Paid reserved parking implemented

When comparing our current compensation package to what was in place prior to January 2017, the above changes equate to more than a 30% increase to the paychecks of our professional drivers! These improvements are well deserved and I thank each of you for making it possible.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and please don’t hesitate to reach out to me any time for any reason.  I look forward to sharing more updates and information in future newsletters.
